In a 2008-09 season highlighted by his and first-time partner James Hewitt’s upset quarterfinal win over Matt Jenson and Clive Leach in Wilmington, this 36-year-old long-time (14 years) Round Hill Club head pro and former three-time all-American at Penn (where he was coached by USSRA Hall Of Famer Ned Edwards and where he and teammate Craig Rappaport reached the final of the ’94 Intercollegiate Doubles) also got to the quarters at the Big Apple Open (where he and partner Joe Pentland overcame an 11-7 fifth-game deficit against Whitten Morris and Addison West), and in Greenwich, Brooklyn and Long Island, in each case with Hewitt as his teammate. Most of Scharff’s most noteworthy career accomplishments have involved escaping multiple-match-balls-against predicaments, examples of this happy characteristic being his only pre-Wilmington ISDA semis advance, keyed by the two fourth-game match-points that he and John Russell saved against Josh McDonald and Viktor Berg before easily winning the fifth in an ‘05 Kellner Cup round of 16; the 18-17 U. S. National Doubles fifth-game semi that he and Preston Quick eked out against the favored McDonald and Scott Butcher; and the 15-14 (from 12-14) ’03 Gold Racquets final that he and Tom Harrity wrested away from Geordie Lemmon and Jamie Heldring. Known for his graceful movement and racquet acumen, this soft-spoken Michigan native is married and the father of three-year-old twin daughters.
