This model of left-wall consistency has gotten to at least the quarterfinal round 15 times in 18 tournament appearances during the past two-plus seasons, mostly (on 10 occasions) with Mark Price as his partner; their quarterfinal win in Vancouver in December ’07 over Gary Waite and Jeff Mulligan represented the first-ever semifinal advance for either Price or Pentland, who got to that stage again a few months later in Cleveland when, pinch-hitting for an injured Paul Price, he and Ben Gould out-played Willie Hosey and Mulligan before losing to eventual champs Viktor Berg and Damien Mudge. The former Trinity player and assistant coach, who also spent several late-1990’s years as an assistant pro at the University Club of New York, defeated the highly-regarded (and three-time Silver Racquets champs) Whitten Morris/Michael Ferreira duo twice in three months during the 2007-08 season, in Chicago with Ben Howell and in Brooklyn with Price. This past autumn he reached the quarters of both full-ranking events, with Whitten Morris in Rye and with Jonny Smith in Manhattan. In the course of earning a masters degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan earlier this decade, the 34-year-old Pentland decided to parlay his keen interest in geometric patterns and sequences into a career as an artist/inventor, as is challengingly depicted in his web site, patterncreation.com.
