The youngest (at 29) of the five English players ranked in the ISDA top-15, this former mainstay of four national championship Trinity teams (2000-2003) is now in his second year as the head pro at the Union Club in Manhattan as well as his second full season on the pro-doubles circuit. Smith’s season-long 2008-09 performance, wherein he and partner Chris Walker were 5-1 in round-of-16 matches (including two five-game victories), actually had its best moment in the one tournament all season in which he played with a different partner, namely the Tavern Club Invitational in Cleveland, where he and James Hewitt dealt the favored John Russell and Preston Quick their only pre-semis loss of the season, a straight-set ambush that ushered Smith into the first ISDA semifinal of his career. Prior to this that season, Smith’s most notable squash accomplishments had come in singles, including hoisting the champion’s trophy at both the Gold Racquets and Treddy Ketcham Invitationals during the mid-2000’s, but after this past season of visible week-to-week improvement under Walker’s mentoring partnership, he combined with Yvain Badan to reach the final round of the U. S. Pro Championship in the debut appearance of what could well be an extremely productive ISDA partnership.
