This powerfully-built and versatile former England
Junior No. 1 recently advanced into the ISDA top-10 on the strength of a
trio of stellar performances which began last spring when he and Yvain Badan
toppled Preston Quick and John Russell to reach the semis of the Kellner Cup
and continued through this autumn when he and new partner Raj Nanda first
captured the Challenger Pittsburgh Cup (in a final-round comeback from two
games to one down against Trevor McGuinness and Todd Ruth) and then followed
a successful march through a murderous Big Apple Open qualifier with a
quarterfinal win over the second seeded Price brothers, Paul and Mark, the
only time this season that a qualifying team has made it as far as the
semis. Currently in his third year as the head pro at the Union Club in
Manhattan after a prior stint at the University Club, Smith had been a
productive right-wall partner of Chris Walker in 2008-09 before moving to
his preferred slot on the left with Badan last season. He has now in fact
reached three ISDA semis with three different partners, having attained that
position in 2010 with Badan at the Kellner Cup and Nanda at the Big Apple
Open, as noted, and also with James Hewitt (also at the expense on
Russell/Quick) in Cleveland ’09. After starring on Trinity College’s
national championship squads from 2000-03, Smith proceeded to win a pair of
strong New York metropolitan-area singles tournaments, namely the Yale Club
Invitational and the Gold Racquets before deciding to concentrate on doubles
a few years ago.
