A career-best 2008-09 season for this English-born Creek Club squash professional culminated in his first ISDA ranking-tournament semifinal at the late-April Vancouver Open, where he and Yvain Badan straight-gamed Michael Leckie and Rob Dinerman before losing their highly competitive match-up with Ben Gould and Paul Price. Howell also excelled last year in two of the Challenger events, reaching the semis in Pittsburgh with Bruce Marrison and, a few months later, partnering Jeff Mulligan to the final at Germantown on the strength of consecutive excellent wins over first the Shane Coleman/Gavin Jones Cynwyd Club tandem (finalists just three weeks earlier at another Challenger event) and then (in five games) the power-hitting duo of Tim Porter and Greg Park. The fact that Howell had never played with either Badan, Marrison or Mulligan prior to these respective praiseworthy achievements points up the versatility and adaptability that this former PSA No. 75 possesses, along with the melting drop shots, deceiving mobility and wrist-flicking deception that characterize his fast-improving game.
